Transcendental Meditation and AtherosclerosisAtherosclerosis, the build-up of fat deposits on the inside of arterial walls, decreases inner vessel diameter restricting blood flow. If allowed to accumulate, deposits can lead to forms of cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attack.African Americans are twice as likely as others to die from cardiovascular disease (CVD). A team of researchers from three different universities studied African American men and women to determine whether or not the practice of TM would affect the inside diameter of major blood vessels. Sixty hypertensive African Americans at risk for cardiovascular disease were randomly assigned to either the Transcendental Meditation Program or a health education control group. Pretests and posttests were conducted over an average period of approximately seven months. Researchers used intima-media thickness (IMT), the distance between the inner and outer wall of the carotid artery, as an index for measuring inner vessel diameter. IMT is a measure of coronary atherosclerosis, and a predictor of heart attack and stroke. Results demonstrated an impressive reduction of 0.098mm in wall thickness; the control group showed an increase of 0.054mm. Based on previous clinical observations, a decrease of 0.01mm in IMT would indicate an approximate 7.7 to 15 percent reduction in risk of stroke and 11 percent decrease in risk of heart attack. This dramatic study demonstrates the infinite healing power within everyone that is the basis for health and healing. It is the first controlled research showing that a stress reduction technique, unaccompanied by change in diet or lifestyle, can reverse atherosclerosis, thus reducing risk of heart attack and stroke. Although the precise mode of action of this change is not clear, it seems likely that the uniquely deep state of relaxation while awake (“restful alertness”), attained during TM, may be responsible for activating a self-repair mechanism that creates homeostasis or balance, leading to the regression of atherosclerosis.
